PRACTICAL REVIEW GUIDE

AI SOW scope and acceptance: examples for automation projects

An AI statement of work should specify what is delivered, how it is tested, which inputs the client supplies, and how exceptions or extra work are handled. The examples below illustrate commercial questions; they are fictional and are not contract language or legal advice.

Scope example

  • Vague: “We automate customer support and include reasonable revisions.”
  • More specific discussion: name the supported channel and use cases, the included revision rounds, exclusions and the process for approving extra work. These details must be agreed for the actual project.

Acceptance example

  • Vague: “The project is complete when the customer is satisfied.”
  • More specific discussion: agree the test cases, observable acceptance criteria, delivery checklist, reviewer and feedback period before implementation. Do not copy a sample accuracy target without evidence from representative tests.

Maintenance example

  • Vague: “Ongoing support is included.”
  • More specific discussion: agree the support period, response hours, monthly capacity, usage limits, client dependencies and who pays for model or API changes.

What still needs expert judgment

  • Automated analysis can identify missing terms but cannot establish that a clause is enforceable in your jurisdiction.
  • Have the responsible commercial owner verify delivery economics and involve a qualified lawyer where legal interpretation is needed.
